Seeing red

Sprekelia - Aztec Lily or Jacobean Lily
It's OK I'm not angry, just seeing red things.

Red Sprekelia lilies are popping up in our Kandos garden at the moment.  I hadn't come across the lily before moving here so had to do a web search to find out their name.  I assure you they need no special care around here, there are lots and lots of them.

The fruit on the small plum tree has begun to ripen.  I picked a few to turn into stewed plums.  I expect the rest will have over ripened or been stung by fruit fly before I am next back to Kandos.  Last year they ripened pretty much at the same time so I was able to strip the tree all at once, not this year.

    1. These plums are lovely and sweet, though small. I also found the lilies keep for a couple of days in a vase which means I could pick some and bring them to my other home to enjoy.

  2. What a showy flower. Is it large?
It's hard to know what to do with so much fruit when it ripens at one time.

    1. A moderate sized lily. I guess 4-5 inches across.
When it all ripened at the same time last year I stewed up the fruit and froze it. Only just finished last years crop in time for this year.

  3. There was a Satsuma plum tree in our small orchard when we moved to the Mountains and the fruit was delicious, but eventually we couldn't control the fruit fly (or the cockatoos) so had the tree removed.

    1. We have one of those too. Its fruit ripens much later. I guess about 75% of the crop was fly affected last year - I just looked for anything with a puncture mark and chucked it away. Cockatoos and other birds don't seem to be a problem, I don't net the trees.

I love having trees in the garden, like their blossoms in spring and the occasional piece of edible fruit so will stick with them, just rake up the dropped fruit and keep the tree.

This especially applies to my pear and apple trees which are big trees.

    1. It has an unusual shape so I was able to identify it with a google image search. Typed red lily and scrolled until I spotted am image like it.
