Cockatoo food

Our neighbours feed the cockatoos and have been disturbed by them also having a nibble at the walls of their house.  As such I am not all that keen when they visit us, like this fellow on our front fence this week

But I needn't worry, their interest is in the pine cones in the trees that line the front of our house.  They are sure leaving a mess for me to clean up.

  1. We have lots of cockatoos. They only do damage when the fruit is in season and then there's a big mess to clean up. They don't come close to the house, so haven't nibbled any timber yet!

    1. I think the problem is that the feeding sets up expectations and when the food is not there they nibble away because they are bored waiting for it to be put out.

  2. The man who lives around the corner started feeding them and now we have them in our macadamia nut trees all the time and they pick the nuts off the tree before they are ready. Then we have nuts all over the ground which can be dangerous to walk on in case of slipping. We have three trees so there are lots of nuts. They also eat the pecan nuts out the front.

    1. The left all of our fruit alone at Kandos but have now moved in on the walnuts which like yours have lots of nuts which are not ready to harvest.

  3. We don't very many cockatoos down here, rather quite a few corellas and galahs though

    1. That's interesting. I have seen huge flocks of cockatoos out in the wheat country. You are lucky to not have too many of them.

  4. Our birds leave a mess, too. But it all falls in the garden no one uses. Cute bird!

    1. Our autumn leaves fall on garden beds but not the pine cones unfortunately.

  5. The only cockatoos I've seen have been pets that are generally kept inside. We have nothing native in this bird family.

    1. I saw a cockatoo in a pet shop in America for sale at an astronomic price. I felt rather sorry for it, as I do for the ones in cages here. I understand that pet birds live for a very long time .. 70 years ... so they are a lifelong commitment.

  6. Encouraging cockatoos is asking for trouble: A kind-hearted bird lover may unwittingly be fuelling a plague of cantankerous cockatoos which are causing massive damage to homes in Melbourne’s east.

We don't feed cockatoos (not intentionally anyway), yet we've had to wire up all the window sills and add metal panels to the doors just to stop them vandalising the house. And for some reason, they've decided the large rubber mat at the front door is perfect for nibbling on. They don't eat it; they just take pieces out. Grrrr!
