The dressmaker

I have been trying to accelerate packing up things at Lawson for the next move of furniture to our home in Kandos.  This week I tackled the "54 drawers" cabinet.  About ten of those drawers had my patch-working fabric stash from when I did quilts over 30 years ago.  It was quite a trip down memory lane to finger the fabrics again, among them were scraps from dresses I made back in my school and uni days.

A book I have read recently
This week's book is another on the Australian list,  The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham. I saw the movie adaptation and found it interesting but rather odd.  The book is a quirky dark comedy with a huge caste of amusing but stereotypical characters. I enjoyed it but mostly I liked being reminded of how much I enjoyed sewing my own clothes.  I think I might rewatch the movie to see what I think of it now and maybe start a patch-working project.

  1. That is a very beautiful cabinet. And it´s always nice to remember - and feel - the happy times from back then.

    1. My Dad used this cabinet for his screws, nuts and bolts and things. It was painted in cream and green paint - a bit of an eye sore. I restored it - took me ages.

  2. I haven't read the book, but I found the movie quite unreal.
This cabinet of 54 drawers, is amazing especially given the history you have just stated.
I wonder what it will hold in your new home?

    1. I guess the cabinet will hold much the same things as it does today - craft, stationery supplies, photographs.

I think I understand the movie better now I have read the book.

  3. I'm reminded of a card catalogue cabinet for libraries.

    1. It is possible that was its original purpose. My Dad bought it at an auction.

  4. A very interesting set of drawers. I really disliked that movie. I guess I don't like dark comedy.

    1. The movie was easy to dislike because it was so strange. I didn't even realise it was a comedy!

    1. It is a rather large piece of furniture. I have been struggling to find a way to fit it into my smaller Kandos house but think I have a spot. I would be very sad to part with it.

    1. Dad used to say there is lovely silky oak and brass handles under all that paint. I think he would be thrilled with how it turned out.
