80HZ: Sound Lab, developed by architect Thomas Wing-Evan in collaboration with State Library of NSW

Last week I was surprised to see this new installation outside the state library. When you go inside it you can choose an artwork and it turns the image into music - which I think is a rather odd concept though I love the structure.  I admit I am often mystified by contemporary art.

A book I have read recently
Given the recent fuss about sexual assalt claims I decided to read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  I had seen the movie but not read the book.   This one has been on occasion banned in American schools for all sorts of reasons but I think it's worthy of an adult reading even though it's written in a deceptively childlike voice.

  1. I too am often mystified by contemporary art Joan Elizabeth, but it's fun trying to imagine what the artist's idea is 😊 I do like the interactive concept of this work here.

    1. Maybe I should try harder and not be so dismissive of their creativity. I will give it a go next time.

  2. Sorry Shirley. I accidentally deleted your comment. This is what you said “I must confess I have not read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I am not a great fan of reading these days as I find I have little time to indulge this pastime. I feel this is my loss and I must endeavour to try and read some books in the near future. I like what they have done to the State Library and must try and get to see it soon. ”

    1. When I wanna young I read all the time. Then life took over and I read less and less, mostly stuck to poetry because it is short and sweet (a poem a day) or non- fiction because it is shorter. Now I have more flexibility to choose I have decided to make it a priority - and have now committed to these Wednesday posts so have to read something each week 😀 I am finding the classics very rewarding. But it is pure leisure - you may have other leisure activities that are more rewarding to you.

  3. Sometimes I wonder if art is different just to be different for its own sake. I try to keep an open mind and go with it though "mystified" is sometimes an apt description. I read "To Kill a Mockingbird" ages ago but re-watched the movie a year or two ago. I've found myself reading much more lately and to my surprise I'm reading more biography and history in addition to mysteries, which can be an addiction.

    1. I guess it is hard to stand out in the art world so finding a point of difference is important. I enjoy autobiography but less so biography. I too have surprised myself with reading some history. I don’t dare start on mysteries, I used to read them years ago and annoyed my husband by getting too engrossed in them. The classics are less of page turners so easier to put aside when there are other demands.

  4. I think from the artist's point of view, any engagement is good, even if it leaves people scratching heads. I prefer to know where the artist is coming from though.

I reread To Kill a Mockingbird and found it still quite powerful. Wasn't too fussed on its sequel, Go Set a Watchman, which felt like a draft version.
