A poem for today
My favourite Australian city poem is William Street by Kenneth Slessor with this memorable line
"You find this ugly, I find it lovely."
Everyday delights in Penrith, Kandos in mid-western NSW and beyond

Some city buildings are very attractive such as the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Tower and, of course, the older buildings such as the Queen Victoria Building. I spent my working life in different Sydney buildings , but now I prefer to be outside, away from buildings, enjoying nature and rural scenery.
ReplyDeleteI have owned and lived in apartments in the CBD. I enjoyed the buzz of the city when in business and flying here there and everywhere. Like you I am now happy to enjoy a quieter lifestyle with a wider view.
DeleteI like the diverging lines in your photo. I like the city in small doses
ReplyDeleteIt was the lines and light caught my eye. I quite like the mix of city and country I have now - as you say, small doses.
DeleteThat is a great saying indeed!
ReplyDeleteOh, I have to keep this in mind!
In Perth you find lots of great mixtures of old and new architecture, too.
This apartment block was previously an old wool store. Repurposing is a good way to mix old and new.
DeleteApartment life can be good at certain times in our lives. When we first arrived in Perth many years ago we were in an apartment directly opposite the beach, it was brilliant.. but not perfect for children. Now our home is five minutes away from the ocean, best of both worlds ✨
ReplyDeleteWe have never had children in our mix so had more choice. Ever since we moved to Sydney area (30 years ago) we have usually had two places - a city apartment and a house further out because I can’t really take a big city alone. Now we are doing the same thing but pushing our boundaries to the inland inland instead of the city. Your current situation sounds perfect for you and your family.
DeleteCities can offer so much. I prefer a lifestyle, as you put it, with a wider view.
ReplyDeleteYou raise a good point about cities having lots to offer . I think they do especially to those still establishing themselves with education and careers. But also lots to offer older folk too.
