Black Cockatoo
Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo
I heard a familiar screech and looked up to find a Black Cockatoo in the neighbour's tree -- it stayed just long enough for me to grab my camera and get a shot. While they are often around when I am bush walking, we don't see them in our gardens much. I think they prefer the native forests.
I think in this case more majestic than pretty. They are a large bird. Here is another shot http://sweetwayfaring.blogspot.com/2012/08/black-cockatoo.html
Yes I was surprised to see it. But haven’t been here long enough to know if it is a rare visit. The neighbour has native trees which would encourage them.
Great shot Joan, they can be fairly skittish and I've found it hard to take their photo... they do a quick visit here in East Gippsland occasionally, stay long enough to tear off some branches of pines.
Nice that you were able to get your camera in time. I went walking today empty handed and encountered a bald eagle perched in a tall tree. One of my favorite birds. I didn't even have my phone with me.
I love the black Carnaby cockatoos Joan Elizabeth, I missed them landing in my bottle brush tree this year, I saw flocks of them flying over, obviously to a much better bottle brush tree 😀 You captured a super shot here.
According to my bird guide Carnaby cockatoos are different from this yellow tailed variety. Such a shame they missed your tree it would have been nice to see a shot to compare.
I've never seen one down our way. Maybe they prefer the Upper Mountains.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting. I have often seen them around Lawson and higher up. This is the first time in Kandos, there were a pair of them.
DeleteWhat a pretty bird!

DeleteOh wow! Lucky you to have him visit... even if it was just for a short while.

ReplyDeleteCockatoos like to do that don’t they but they are not quite as plentiful or destructive as the sulpher crested ones.

ReplyDeleteI would be sooo disappointed to miss an eagle.
DeleteA very special joy for you!
ReplyDeleteGreat to have the camera handy enough on this occasion.
