Advent

Inside the QVB Christmas Tree
We went to the Cathedral this morning and enjoyed the Advent service. Advent is the time leading to the celebration of Christmas and looking forward to the second coming of Christ.

After the service we went to the Queen Victoria Building for lunch where I grabbed this rather interesting shot looking up the inside the Christmas tree.  What you are seeing is the magnificent crystal trunk reflected by the mirrored interior which is also bespangled with more lights and crystals.

Reflection:
John 1:9 New International Version (NIV)
"The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world."

  1. We went to communion this morning in the Anglican Church at Springwood, but very little was mentioned about Advent Sunday. Such a shame! I think the church calendar is important in helping struggling christians (like me) focus on important events in the life of Jesus. Nativity scenes, advent wreaths and candles all remind us of the birth of Jesus,
but some churches these days seem to think these "props" not important.

    1. At the Cathedral they didn't have props as such but the readings, hymns, sermon and anthems by the choir were very much on the theme of Advent. Our Kandos-Rylstone church has the advent wreath and candles.

    2. On reflection, I may have been too quick to criticise our church. The readings were very appropriate for Advent (John 1: 1-18 - the Word becoming flesh in the birth of Jesus) and the hymns also appropriate - O come, O come, Emmanuel, Come, O long expected Jesus and Jesus comes with clouds descending. The sermon also was based on the John 1 reading "Made flesh for glory". We also had a decorated Christmas tree in one corner and were given a card in our news bulletin listing all the Christmas services

    3. Thanks for the update Shirley. I am glad that on reflection you found new depths in the service you attended.

    1. It is a glorious spot and we often eat there but not shop there .... way to expensive for me.

  3. I was pleased with this shot. The movement and mystery of it appeals to me.

  4. I love that photo. I have such happy childhood memories of Christmas as our church used to have a huge nativity scene and baby Jesus used to appear on Christmas Eve. No mention of Jesus in the shops this year at all. It is all about Santa, the Wiggles etc. unfortunately.

    1. We are living an increasingly secular society -- so sad that people are missing out on the good news of Christmas.
