Old Stuff 23

This old stuff post is actually new stuff - returning to the old ways.  Once upon a time trams and double decker buses travelled the streets of Sydney, now we are bringing them back again.

The George Street light rail has been dogged by delays, so even though it is looking lovely in its Christmas finery there are no trams passing under those arches.

I was surprised when I saw a double decker bus the other day. I looked it up and they are progressively replacing the bendy buses with double deckers - so old is new again.

  1. Beautiful decorations. I´ve sadly only seen very little of Sydney and even that is over 20 years ago... Double deckers sure remind me of London (which I visited even longer ago, oh, my! Where is time running?).

  2. I am old enough to remember the old trams when they ran down George Street in Sydney. They were awful and everyone was glad when they were removed. However, it was a mistake and the new ones should be a lot better as regards safety. I can remember people riding on the outside running boards because they were so crowded. I don't like double decker buses as I dislike climbing the internal stairs when the bus is moving.

    1. I didn’t know Sydney in those days but remember trams in Brisbane. I’ve never caught a double decker bus but can imagine the problem you describe. I try to avoid the stairs on the trains for that reason.

  3. I like the arches.

We once had streetcars here, but they're long gone. We're in the final stages of a first phase of major expansion of our LRT. And our transit system does include double decker buses.
