Oh I am jealous. I have only ever seen and photographed a kingfisher once and that was with a long lens at a distance. I had to blow up the image to be sure it was a kingfisher. Was beside the Macquarie river, never in my gardens
We have European starlings. They have stubby tails like this one, are about the size of a robin and are shaped like this one. Ours are a glossy brownish black. They're speckled when non-breeding with a dark bill and iridescent with a yellow bill when breeding. They were introduced into the U.S. and have quite a presence here.
It’s a bit hard to see from the photo, but if the plumage is speckled, then it could be a starling. However, starlings don’t have long necks. What’s their flight like? Starlings often fly in formation and sound like a jet.
Mmmm. I could not see any speckles and no flying in formation. I will have to wait until they visit again and try to get a closer look. Thanks for the info Vicki.
It reminds me of one.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think I have ever seen one before to be ‘reminded’
DeleteI don't know starlings but we just had a beautiful kingfisher sitting on our fence.

ReplyDeleteIf this is a starling they are introduced here too. Your description seems a bit like this bird.
DeleteI don't know but an Aussie crow just "worked" on our roof so loud we thought it's a human! Birds can be funny fellas!
ReplyDeleteCrows don’t have the nicest of voices.
DeleteSorry can't help.
ReplyDeleteOh well thanks for trying.
