Kandos cement

Cement Works @ Kandos viewed from the lookout
Kandos was born in 1913 when a group of industrialists realised that limestone, shale and coal deposits near a railway could foster an industry.  The cement works and coal mining were the backbone of the town until 2011 when the cement works closed.  In 2013 and 2015 the nearby underground and open cut coal mines closed.

One of the quirky features of the town was a ropeway which ran 5 kms from the limestone quarry to the cement works.  Sadly it was dismantled when the cement works closed.  Here is a photo from my archive below.

  1. The old cement works really stands out there in the country side Joan Elizabeth, wonder if they will leave it as a reminder, maybe as a museum or eventually knock it down?

    1. At the moment I think the company has mothballed it in the hopes of some future purpose.

    1. As a newbie in the town I am not much across its history and workings. Perhaps it is time I paid the town museum a visit.

  3. What a pretty area for such industrial uses.

    1. There has been industrial activity in this area for a long time. Small mining operations don't necessarily have major impact on landscape. In fact we had our bush block at Clandulla for years oblivious to the fact that behind a nearby mountain was an open cut coal mine. I only found out when a neighbour told me. I checked Google satellite view to confirm it otherwise I may not have believed him.

  4. If there is a museum indeed I hope for pictures. 5 km is quite a distance, too!
