Common (Indian) Myna |
This is an introduced species that has made itself very much at home in the cities - I took this photo at Sydney Botanic Gardens. Lots of people are very unhappy with these birds because they are said to displace native species. There is another grey version which is a native bird the Noisy Miner which is also a bit of a lout. I'm glad I don't see either of them in my gardens.
The names are funny. And sadly many people do not understand that Australia actually is "pure", that you cannot bring in seeds, plants, meat etc. You see the weirdest things people want to bring to Australia on airports (not "for real" in my case, I only saw a docu on it - but I saw a family with a trunk full of Chinese food in Frankfurt airport!)....
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who has tried to get people to bring in honey from her home country and it gets confiscated every time. I explained to her why we have such protections in place.
DeleteWe get both the Noisy and Indian Miners in our garden.
ReplyDeleteI had a feeling you would say that Shirley as you are down closer to the urban areas. Quite a few years ago now we had Indian Mynas visit at Lawson but I was glad to see them disappear soon after.
DeleteA beautiful bird.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly has interesting colouring.
DeleteI do see a lot of Indian Mynas when I visit Sydney and they seem to eat everything and scare other birds from what they are feeding on. I don't see them in Perth.
ReplyDeleteGood glad you don't see them.
DeleteNope haven't seen them here either, sounds like that's a good thing 😊
ReplyDeleteLucky you.
DeleteIntroduced species can do enormous damage and out-compete native species to devastating effect. People don't realize that disrupting natural balance can have wide-ranging consequences.
ReplyDeleteI think there is pretty good awareness of the problem these days, but it's too late in most cases.
DeleteThey're a common sight here ii now suburbia. My dog loves to chase them away.
ReplyDeleteGood on dog.
