Kookaburra
I spotted a group of kookaburras at the botanic gardens in Sydney recently. I don't think of them as city birds but I guess we see or hear their characteristic laugh just about everywhere.
I wonder if we smile when we hear them because we have been told their call is a laugh. What if we had been told it was a cackle or something less pleasant.
I'm always hearing them, but haven't seen one in our yard for a while. Love the Kookas! They always make me feel happy with their cheerful "laugh"
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard them much in the mountains lately. Have never really seen them a lot in the garden. They used to steal the fish from the fish pond.
DeleteOh, yes, we heard one at the Caravan Park, too. We have one (!One lonely fella!) at the zoo here - he never "laughs", certainly...
ReplyDeletePoor kookaburra. I am told the like company not be left alone.
DeleteI love them, even when they wake me at sun up 😊 so cute.
ReplyDeleteI hear them mostly in the evening not the morning at Kandos.
DeleteThey are such cute birds, love to hear their laugh too :)

DeleteA strange name, but quite a pretty bird.
ReplyDeleteI thought I would check up the origin of the name. Apparently it is from the aboriginal Wiradjuri tribe, onomatopoeic of its call."
