Yes, it is sad that the Post Offices and Banks have closed down in lot of regional towns. Now the locals around here have to travel to Toowoomba to use those services. Such a shame.
I noticed also that the bigger country towns we have visited still have their post office and bank, but not the smaller towns. I'm glad you still have yours Joan Elizabeth.
The truth is I use neither of them. It is very rare for me to post a letter these days. And my banking I do via the web. Occasional access to an ATM for cash does the rest.
Postal facilities are usually available at the News Agent. It is rare for a stand alone post office to still exist especially in a country town.
You made me thinking. I do believe in the village where my Brother lives they do have... ha. A post-office-museum! And no bank no more. It´s sad, is it. What are you supposed to do if you get sick or simply old. Then again. My bank is in Frankfurt, some 300 km away, at least I can call them...
Post Offices used to be the grander buildings in town so they typically have been turned into cafes, galleries and museums. As explained to William, post office facilities are generally still available in towns, just not in the post office building. Banking would be harder since lots of older folk prefer to deal with people rather than machines. But wherever the post office has moved to most of the things people used to do in the bank can be done there. Cash can be withdrawn at the supermarket.

ReplyDeleteI guess quite a few of our services have "migrated" to Mudgee. But for the while we have all of the things we need.

ReplyDeleteIt started small and went bigger and bigger.
DeleteWe takes these for granted until they are gone.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteFor banks, one generally has to get to a town. Many villages here will still have a post office.
