Bogan Gate - Silos
Bogan Gate (on the way to Trundle) is like just about every town and locality out west, it has grain silos. Unlike the north of Victoria these towns are not part of a silo art trail.
I knew the name would amuse some readers. For international readers Bogan is Australian slang for "a person whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour are considered unrefined or unsophisticated".
Places like Bogan Gate, Bogan Shire and the Bogan River existed long before this slang term emerge in the 1980s. Bogan Gate is said to be derived from a local aboriginal word meaning "the birthplace of a notable headman of the local tribe"
Nyngan which is in the Bogan Shire has erected a Big Bogan.
I have only seen a few silos with art on them and they were fabulous. The quality of the art seems to be a cut above street art in general. I am looking forward to seeing more them one day ... sure beats the "big things" for a tourist attraction.

ReplyDeleteI guess there is not a lot you can do with silos to make them different, other than painting them with artwork.
DeleteI love the silo art in many of the small towns. I wish some of our silos could be painted too as we have a lot of street art here.
