Shadows of the past

Here are three stories from this week that had me thinking of things in the past reflected in my today world.

Bygone trees

At the moment there are lots yellow autumn crocus popping up in my Kandos garden.  The ones in the lawn whisper of past trees that they used to circle.

A Father's Patience

This old scrubbed pine kitchen table was in my childhood home and for the past 28 years has been in in our kitchen at Lawson. Whenever brothers and sisters have visited we have enjoyed gathering around the table reminiscing.

Even though we are downsizing it's too special to be discarded so has become our dining table at Kandos and I have been giving the paintwork a spruce up.  While painting I noticed the many running repairs done to the two chairs on the left.

It made me think of my Dad fixing chairs on the front verandah and the countless number of times we children were admonished for tipping the chairs because they would break. As the family grew bigger the bench was moved in for we younger ones, it was studier than the chairs.

Ghost House

On the drive between Lawson and Kandos there is hill just after the cafe at Running Stream.  At the top of the hill a small pine plantation and abandoned timber cottage have stood for many a long year looking out on the expansive view. I planned to photograph this photogenic "Ghost House" one day but it's in a difficult spot to stop the car. Then the fires came and the Ghost House burnt down!  Just a brick chimney to show what was once there.

Have you ever procrastinated and missed a shot that you wish you now had?

  1. That is so sad about the Ghost House. The fires were so devastating and we seem to have gone from one crisis to another since the end of last year. We also had a kitchen table we used to sit around all the time when growing up.

    1. I reckon it was better for the Ghost House to burn than one occupied by living people. The farm over the road seemed to have some of its out buildings destroyed I hope people still suffering from earlier events (cyclones, floods, drought and fire) don't get lost in the latest crisis which hopefully is the last for a while.

  2. On occasion I have missed shots that I wished I had taken.

  3. Decades ago we were at Butchart Gardens in Victoria B.C. with my husband's parents. They walked hand-in-hand on ahead of us down a long walkway covered by a rose arbor, perfect and beautifully framed. I couldn't get my camera up and focused in time to take the shot. That one was poor timing and now have to cherish it in my mind. I try to avoid procrastination but am often defeated, like you, by not having a place to stop.

    1. That sounds like a perfect shot missed. I am glad you still have it in your minds eye. Not being fast enough is often a problem for me, particularly with bird photos.

  4. Beautiful you kept the kitchen set!
I still have my Grandmother´s, we sit at it every day. Burned spots thanks to my Brother included!
I was lucky enough to be taken into an old asylum before it was teared down. And a very small hut, too. Peeks in other people´s life from long ago are impressive.

    1. I have burned some spots on this table myself. Fortunately I could scrub them off - after all what is another small dent in an old table.

Yes, I often want to turn back for that missed image, until another captures my attention.
