Hyacinths

There was another nice surprise in the garden this week.  A bunch of hyacinths beneath a rose bush have flowered this year.  The garden is alive with lots of different blue-purple flowers at the moment.  And there are bees everywhere.

Now that had me wondering whether bees have a preference for purple flowers so I looked it up and this is what I found "It seems bees, especially honey bees are born attracted to the colour purple. Flowers in the blue-violet range produce the most nectar."

The clumps of always reliable grape hyacinth are also in flower.

  1. Didn't know that bee fact. Purple is a favourite colour of mine.

    1. I have since read that they also like yellow flowers but can't see red.

  2. Two gorgeous images. Bulbs don't survive here sadly. Looks like we have to plant more purple floering plants to help the bees.

    1. Bulbs surviving are our reward for enduring cold winters! The bees love the borage in my vegie garden. I don't find borage much use as a herb (the leaves taste of cucumber but are too hairy for me) but the blue flowers are pretty and can be frozen in ice cubes.

  3. Hyacinth is often used as a companion to tulips in formal flowerbeds during our tulip festival.

    1. Not much use here as a companion -- no sign of tulips flowers yet.
