From our Penrith apartment we can hear and catch a glimpse of the trains (as we could from our Blue Mountains home). We know them by their different "voices" -- suburban trains, intercity trains, freight trains, Bathurst bullet train, the Indian Pacific and Dubbo XPT. My husband's favourite is the XPT which passes through Penrith around 8:00am each day and returns around 8:00pm.
Nearly every day for the past 30 years he has suggest catching the XPT out to Dubbo 'one day'. We did back in 2009 and it was time to do it again this week. The countryside was spring green with all the rivers and creeks full. Around Wellington we caught the canola fields in flower too. A great trip. We must do it again 'one day'.
I've never taken the XPT. Other trip to take.
ReplyDeleteWhen the railway union gets over striking there are new trains destined for this route. The XPT fleet is getting old but still a good ride.
DeleteI haven't travelled on a local train for ages as none travel through our suburb. We have the O'Bahn bus service here in our suburb and I used it sometimes to go to work but now we are retired I haven't used it but do plan to soon as our new home is not far from the interchange. We have travelled on a few trains when on holidays and had a great trip on the Rovos Rail in South Africa which was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWe are train tragics. If I can catch a train I will always choose it over driving or flying. The South African trip sounds wonderful. I have not done a lot of international train travel.
DeleteThat sounds a great idea. We must do that!
ReplyDeleteThe trip is worth it. You need to have an overnight stay at Dubbo, otherwise it's a 12 hour round trip with only a half hour at Dubbo before returning. Another possibility for a day trip is to go as far as Millthorpe which is an interesting town and pick it up on the way back.
DeleteThanks for the tips.
DeleteI love the sound of trains and train travel. This would have been a lovely excursion for you both.
ReplyDeleteWe are checking out where to go next.
DeleteThat's interesting to know their voices. I didn't know we had so many trains.
