Kandos, like many country towns, has large housing blocks with lots of lawn. The people here are also lawn proud with nearly every garden neatly mowed. When the sun shines there is the ubiquitous sound of mowers buzzing around (there are few cars so no traffic noise).
Even with my newly acquired ride-on it is hard to keep up this spring, given all the rain. A freshly mowed green lawn is a delight for the eyes but this patch of poppies I leave to grow wild.
The roses are loving the rain too. The spring flush is now coming out with big blooms on long stems, like this beauty.
It is raining again here, this morning. Frank managed to mow yesterday thankfully. I too would be leaving that splash of gold. What type of poppy is it? Your rose is perfection and I imagine has the most glorious perfume.

DeleteYes Helen, as Nana Chel has identified, they are Californian Poppies. There are also wild purple and pink poppies about in the garden but not with this wonderful abandon.
DeleteNana Chel, I especially planted them in this patch because it is hard to mow and I know that when they get established they self seed like crazy. I am pleased to see my plan is working. The display is about twice the size this year. I have tried planting other colours of Californian Poppies but they don't seem to take. I am giving them another go in a different part of the garden this year.
DeleteRain makes the grass grow and mowing necessary more often.
ReplyDeleteRain sure does make the grass grow with it is warm but still mild, as in Spring. In Summer it slows down. I am looking forward to that.

DeleteThe patch of poppies is very pretty. I would be leaving it also. You are lucky also to have such beautiful roses. Our roses have black spot.
ReplyDeleteOur roses look lovely and healthy right now but I know black spot is only weeks (maybe days) away. I spray them but never win the battle, that's why the spring flush is so welcome before the roses look ratty, though they continue to produce blooms right through the season.
