I have been at Penrith this week and thought, oh dear I don't have a photo for today. Then this morning I heard the loud whistle of a steam train. It's always fun to see heritage trains. It was doing trips between Penrith and Valley Heights today. Many happy passengers boarded with hampers on hand to enjoy a picnic on a beautiful sunny spring day.
The train trip looks very exciting and a good day out for a picnic too. We have enjoyed a few steam train trips and had a fabulous few days on the Rovos Rail in South Africa but because of the hot weather and water supplies, the steam engine was only for the first few hours before they changed to diesel. It was still a great trip. We are hoping to do some more here in the future.
ReplyDeleteI have done a couple of short heritage train rides in South Australia but none overseas.
DeleteSo glad you heard the whistle, Joan. These images evoke happy memories of similar train journeys.
ReplyDeleteI remember steam trains coming into our country town on a regular basis when I was a kid (that is when they were real trains not tourist trains). It made it's final run in 1964.
DeleteWe have a steam train here during the Carnival of Flowers. I always mean to take a ride but never do. Maybe next year. Chel.
ReplyDeleteThey have heritage trains in Kandos/Rylstone on special occasions too. I have never caught one but always run out with my camera to catch a photo if I hear them.
DeleteGreat to see a steam train running.
ReplyDeleteI think they take quite a lot of work to keep on the rails. So yes, it is good to see a few of them still about.
DeleteI heard the whistle and thought it must have been a steam train passing through. I didn't realise they ran picnic trains up to Valley Heights and then I remembered the first weekend in the month is always an open day at the train museum in Valley Heights.
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised your heard it. It was a very noisy whistle. I have not gone to the museum at Valley Heights ... I might do it one day.
