The aftermath

Winter has arrived but before it settles in completely we have the aftermath of autumn to deal with.  I took the shot above when walking around the city recently.  The big leaves of plane trees plastered on wet city pavements are a feature of city life.  Below is the country version.

In my garden I am waiting for the leaves to finishing falling then I will mow over them and in a few places blow them onto the garden beds.  I don't enjoy raking or sweeping leaves so I don't do it.   How about you?

  1. I never did enjoy raking up Autumn leaves, but now I no longer have this job I cannot understand why people in the suburbs object to the mess created by Autumn leaves. It is a seasonal reminder and, as such, I love to see the Autumn leaves falling and know that in a month's time the trees will be bare and Winter will be upon us. However, my neighbours now hate to see the "mess" created by the falling leaves and all they want to do is chop down the trees that create this mess. As I come from the Mountains this attitude is totally unacceptable to me and I try to get my point of view across, but I do not meet with any success!

    1. A "mess". I think they are a delight. Though they do have to be cleaned off city pavements because they get a bit slippery.

  2. We've raked the leaves once. Will do the remainder of the crepe myrtle leaves when they have finished falling. It's not that bad when there's only one tree.

    1. I agree one tree is not much of a job. Our crepe myrtles dropped their leaves before the last time I mowed so they are done as have most of the fruit trees. The ones that make the big pile of leaves are the walnuts.

  3. The fallen leaves are good for the critters too.

    1. They certainly make good compost that is why I put them on garden beds and mow them to feed the lawn.

  4. Lovely photos and the weather here is very similar too with the crepe myrtles all losing their leaves - we have one in our small front yard. I quite like raking the leaves but it's just the cold I'm not so keen on but it is what it is!

    1. I am not much keen on the cold either. Penrith is much warmer than our place at Kandos so I think we might spend more of the winter there. Both are better than our old place in the Blue Mountains where there is mist and wind added to the cold.

  5. When I manage to find an autumn tree, I love to hear the crunching sound as I walk through them!

    1. There is plenty of crunch at our place in Kandos as the moment. The big walnut tree has dumped all its leaves.

  6. They are pretty but I wouldn't like cleaning them up. Your idea sounds a good one. Needless to say we don't have that problem.

    1. Our autumn leaves are the compensation for having to put up with cold winters. There is plenty of frost about at the moment.
